FAQs

How do I know that I need therapy?

Some people think that only people with severe psychological problems need therapy. The truth is everyone deals with life challenges at one time or another and some may need to speak to someone about their challenges. At times people may find themselves overwhelmed and unable to deal with the stress they encounter or may be unable to resolve troubling situations in their lives without someone’s help. Some other people may experience difficulty managing relationships with loved ones or other people in their lives. If these sounds like issues you are experiencing, therapy is an option you may consider.

What do I need to do to prepare for my consultation session?

Once you decide that you would like to come to therapy you can reach me by calling (305-614-2941) for a phone consultation. The phone consultation typically last for 5-10 minutes. This will be an opportunity for me to understand the issue that has led you to seek therapy and determine whether I am able to help you. We will then make a decision regarding the best course of treatment for you and schedule an initial appointment. Occasionally, you may require service that I do not provide or fall outside of my area of expertise. If this is the case, I will refer you to an appropriate provider in the area.

How long is each therapy session?

The length of the therapy session depends on the number of people who come to therapy and the purpose of the appointment. The intake session, which is the next session following the consultation, lasts for 60 minutes. Individual therapy sessions typically last for 45-50 minutes. Couples and family therapy sessions typically last for 85-90 minutes.

How long will I be in therapy?

There is no specific length for therapy. Therapy is a personal experience that is tailored to fit your needs. For this reason, the duration is determined by the issues that you need to work on in therapy, the amount of time and resources you wish to devote to therapy, and so forth. When we meet for the initial appointment and I get a clear understanding of your presenting problem, we will work together and set goals for your treatment. We will then determine the length of time and number of sessions that we would need to achieve these goals.

What if I still have questions?

If you still have questions about whether you really need therapy or have doubts about how therapy can help you deal with the challenges in your life, I suggest that you contact me for a free phone consultation. After we discuss your presenting issue you will then decide whether you would like to begin therapy. You will be under no pressure or obligation to begin therapy. I will, however, give you recommendations.
